Merv became an auctioneer in the spring of 1988; so Merv & Joan, with the help of their two sons, Dean & Mark, started Grunow's Auction 31 years ago. We started doing sales in the Wainwright area, and built an auction barn west of Wainwright five miles, where we lived and held auctions. We sold everything; groceries, Estates Sales, Guns, Odd & Unusual, Horses, etc. Then we branched into Buffalo, Elk & Cattle. We had a fire after an all day sale, on November 25, 2001, and our auction barn burnt to the ground. We were devastated; but we regrouped and rebuilt a new and better barn. The animals came onto the scale that was behind glass, so everyone could see them, but they couldn't hear or see the people. They were much quieter and less excited. Then in 2005 someone came along and bought the place, so we semi-retired. Now we just hold on-site sales. One of Merv's favorite things to do is charity sales, so we do several of these a year.
