Important historic auction and vendor show in Deadwood SD. August 14-17 to be held in conjunction with the 2008 Ft. Pierre to Deadwood wagon train. Items included in the auction are an 1928 award winning oil painting “South Dakota Evening” by noted South Dakota artist Jes Schlaikjer (1897-1982). Schlaikjer was born and raised on a homestead in southwestern South Dakota in the 1890’s, he studied art under fellow noted South Dakota artist Harvey Dunn and in 1928 “South Dakota Evening” was the winner of the first ever ALTMAN PRIZE for best figurative painting. A rare chance to own an artistic piece of South Dakota history. Also included in the sale are two original Abbot & Downing stagecoaches and a six horse team trained to pull coaches. Early Deadwood ephemera including the indictment and death warrant for Deadwood murderer Charles Brown, 1897. Stock certificates issued to Seth Bullock, photos and a carved stone statue of historic Deadwood saloon owner Mike Russell by J.H. Riordan who also carved Wild Bill Hickock’s original head stone statue. Casey Tibbs original PRCA Gold Life Time Membership card carried by Casey throughout the remainder of his life. Wild West performer, buffalo hunter and youngest Pony Express rider Broncho Charlie’s Collection. Broncho Charlie rode for both Pawnee Bill and Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. A 1927 Wurlitzer Band Organ, fantastic original cast iron banks, original saloon and gambling items including two original roulette tables with the original roulette wheels one of which was originally shipped to Rapid City, SD. Original Slot machines, keno gooses, faro counters and saloon back bar bottles. Many cowboy items including saddles, spurs, chaps and more. Native American bead work. Tentative special appearance by Colt Firearms President Lt. Gen. Wm. Keys whom generously donated a custom engraved, Colt Single Action revolver, serial number DW1876 with proceeds to benefit the Days of 76 Museum. Firearms include modern, collectible and antique such as Colt, Winchester, S&W, target, hunting, sporter, shotguns and more. Over 700 firearms to be sold.
