Netherlands: Largest Flower Auction in the World
Largest Flower Auction in the World
From Parsleys Notebook , A Great News Source for farm news in Western Canada
The Dutch are famous for their flowers and visiting FloraHolland, the world’s largest flower auction in Aalsmeer, Netherlands was an eye opener for me. It’s city blocks long. Fresh flowers are moved around in carts so quickly, they keep tourists out of the way by providing visitors a place to view the action via an overhead walking gallery. The auction takes place in electronically equipped buyer rooms where seating is almost like being in an auction mart, but surprisingly, is over in minutes. The price starts high and the bids move lower; very different from our farm and cattle auctions where the price starts low and moves higher. Every kind of flower and bulb and greenery imaginable is sold and departs for its’ destination immediately. The uniformity of the floral offerings is remarkable. And the quality of the blooms stuns the eye. You get that whiff of fresh florist-flower smell too. My kinda’ of day. Pars
